Sibiu-Agnita Railway update from Laurie Webb, our Romanian Correspondent

SAR volunteers held another steam weekend on 17/18th September in hot, sunny weather. I travelled to Cornatel on Wednesday afternoon with fellow expat Colin Shaw. We reached Cornatel too late for work so went to our accommodation and then a meal with Romanian volunteers and members of the SARUK British support group, who had flown to Sibiu earlier in the week.

Thursday: Colin and I moved old standard gauge sleepers. Good ones will be cut in half for narrow gauge sleepers and split ones used to fuel the steam engine at the next steam weekend.

Friday: I offered to fix the SAR motor trolley which had developed a problem when the starter engaged at random. I found a loose wire, checked for signs of any short circuit and reconnected the battery. Nothing untoward happened so I pressed the starter. The Trabant engine finally started and Mihai, president of the volunteers, suggested I test drive the trolley in the station yard to see if the problem recurred. After an hour there were no problems - result!

Saturday: Mihai asked me to drive the motor trolley and trailers to shuttle passengers over the last two kilometres to Hosman, where they could visit a roof tile factory. Due to its weight the steam loco was barred from the last two kilometres where rotten sleepers have been removed but not replaced - the gaps can be seen in my video. I spent the next three hours shuttling 10 to 20 passengers back and forth. Colin had to return for business reasons so we came home Saturday evening.

I have compiled a video using photographs, some from other volunteers, and video I filmed myself...
